Disney is reportedly working on its own ESPN streaming service

Disney is reportedly preparing to launch a standalone ESPN streaming service in the coming years.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Disney has begun laying the groundwork for the new plan. The company is currently in talks with cable providers and sports leagues. There is no specific timeline yet regarding its release.

Currently, the ESPN+ monthly streaming service does not offer access to the ESPN channels themselves and does not include NBA and NFL broadcasts, which are only available on TV.

The network plans to shift content entirely to streaming through the new service. Once the standalone streaming service goes live, ESPN will still be available on traditional TV platforms, giving cable providers stiff competition.

So far, the project has been codenamed ‘Flagship’. Disney and ESPN have been planning to launch standalone services for a while now. Both companies are now finally implementing the plan.
